# Kent G3 GEN Port — Generator, AC-Couple, Smart Load

> Three exclusive GEN port roles: three-phase DG generator input, AC-coupled PV inverter, or smart load output — wiring and settings for each.

The Kent G3's GEN port takes **one of three exclusive roles**: generator input, AC-coupled PV inverter, or smart-load output. The roles cannot run simultaneously, and the generator rules are stricter than most crews expect. Decide the role at survey — not at commissioning.

<Warning>
  **For trained and authorized installers only.**
</Warning>

## Role 1 — Generator (Three-Phase Only)

The GEN port accepts a **three-phase DG only**, sized at or below the inverter's rated power.

| Model | Max GEN input power | Max input current |
| ------------ | ------------------- | ----------------- |
| Kent G3 10KW | 10 kW               | 15.2 A            |
| Kent G3 12KW | 12 kW               | 18.2 A            |
| Kent G3 15KW | 15 kW               | 22.8 A            |

Via the GEN port, the DG serves **backup loads only**. If the DG also needs to feed grid-side loads, connect it through an **ATS on the grid side** — the CT or meter is mandatory in that case.

<Note>
  **Single-phase DG homes cannot use the Kent G3 GEN port.** Route a single-phase DG through a grid-side ATS — or the site belongs on the single-phase Kent platform. Raise this at survey, not at commissioning.
</Note>

<Warning>
  **Never combine a DG with a grid-tied inverter on the same system.** The interaction can cause damage. Raise it at the design stage.
</Warning>

### Generator Wiring and Settings

* **G-V dry contact (16-pin block, pins 8/9):** voltage-free contact wired to the DG's normally-open start relay. Open = DG off. Shorted = DG start.
* In **Auto mode**, the DG starts when SOC falls to the **ON SOC threshold** and stops when it reaches the **OFF SOC threshold**. Set both thresholds in the generator settings menu.
* In **Manual mode**, you start and stop the DG from the HMI.
* The **generator position must be correctly selected in the inverter settings** after wiring. A wrong or missing selection can prevent the system from operating correctly.

## Role 2 — AC-Couple (Retrofit PV Inverter)

<Steps>
  <Step title="Confirm the coupled inverter is three-phase">
    The coupled grid-tied inverter must be three-phase and rated at or below the G3's rated power.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm frequency-watt response">
    Check with the PV inverter manufacturer that its frequency-watt response is active and confirm its first-level over-frequency trip value.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set Max frequency">
    In the G3 settings, set **Max frequency = the coupled inverter's first-level over-frequency value + 0.1 Hz**. At SOC ≥ 85%, the G3 raises frequency to this value and curtails the coupled inverter.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Configure Max Export Control">
    On a sustained export breach, the smart-port relay opens and disconnects the coupled inverter. Set the export limit accordingly.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Note>AC-couple export control behaviour is pending Kent validation. \[KNB-VAL-10]</Note>

## Role 3 — Smart Load

Select **Smart load output** in the GEN port settings, then configure:

* **On-grid always on** — load is powered whenever the grid is present.
* **Off-grid always off** — load is shed during a grid outage.
* **OFF SOC threshold** — the battery level at which the smart load is shed.
* **ON SOC threshold** — the battery level at which the smart load is restored.

Backup loads always win — if the combined backup load and smart load exceed rated power, the smart load is shed first.

## Common Mistakes

* A single-phase DG wired to the three-phase GEN port — discovered at the first grid outage.
* DG expected to feed grid-side loads through the GEN port alone instead of via an ATS.
* Generator position not selected or set incorrectly in settings after correct physical wiring.
* Max frequency value guessed instead of verified from the coupled inverter's specification.
